Should I get a dog?

For a long time my wife keep on asking me to get her a dog. the problem is that I don’t like dogs, specially because when I was a child I had 2 and both of them died tragically. Another reason is because I live in an apartment.

The only dog I’m considering to buy is one from the breed Maltese. They are very small and they don’t lose too much hair. [I'm allergic by the way]

Many people said that the dog would stay the same size as in this picture. I would like to have a dog that is smaller than a soda can.

I promised my wife that by next sprint we will buy one dog or maybe bring one from Brazil next time we go there. [way cheaper in Brazil]

Some people say that dog is the man’s best friend, but I don’t know if this is true. Lately I’ve seen so many cases of dogs killing people.

I don’t like the idea of having a pitbull or Rottweiler in my backyard. Those type of dogs if not well training tend to get mad at everybody and start to destroying everything in front of them.

The number of violent dogs on the street increase because many of the Jiu Jitsu fighter want to have one to show off. They thought that having a killer dog would show people that they are killer fighter as well. I don’t believe in this BS, I think the guys who have this dogs just use them to protect themselves.

The situation in Brazil was so bad not so long ago that some states banned those type of dogs. If you want to have one of them you’ll need a special license for it.

PS: for the people who has a dog, please leave a comment with some advice.

I think that you should weigh everything up before making a final decision. It perhaps depends upon your lifestyle. A dog is by nature a pack animal – they either like to be the leader of the pack, in which case life can be quite difficult for their owners as those type of dogs are never easy to train. Or they will allow you to be leader of the pack and be very submissive, tail wagging and sometimes afraid for no apparent reason. You need to think of their daily requirements. Being a pack animal they need company so are not really suited to people who are at work all day. They need walks usually two or three each day. Then there’s the usual food, water, grooming and so on. Lastly there’s the vet bills for yearly innoculations and occasional illnesses.

If you have a puppy – they go through a destructive stage where they will rip things up not realising that you do not want them to – it’s just a mixture of play to them and also as with all youngsters they go through a teething stage.

As long as you are able to accept and forgive the destruction and mess then start looking to the positives.

They are company and fill in all the spare time that you can give them and if you get a good natured one they will love you in spite of everything.

A maltese stays very small and so does a teacup yorkshire terrior. Make sure, in both cases, that you get them from a reputable breeder. If they are interbred each can have mental and physical issues.

Why on earth would you buy a dog if you are allergic, don’t like dogs, and don’t trust them? I’m just asking. I say no dog. :)

Any animal can be mean. it’s dependent not on size or breed but by the responsibility and love the pet owner shows the animal.

  5. If you are in an apartment, then a small breed such as a Maltese would be suitable. My husband and I have a chocolate lab. He is lovable (very affectionate, friendly dog), but huge! Good thing we have an acre of property for him to run around on! If you are allergic, miniature schnauzers, cairn terriers, Maltese, Lhasa Apso, Yorkshire terriers, Jack Russell terriers, Scottish terriers, and Westhighland white terriers are good. Not only are they small breeds and suitable for apartments, but I believe all are non-shedding and suitable for people with allergies. Because these breeds are terriers, they will be yappy. I had a miniature schnauzer growing up. He was lovable, but very yappy with strangers and company. These dogs also have longevity because they are small. My mini schnauzer lived to be nearly 16 which is old for a dog! Good luck in your doggie endeavor!

My advice is you go to Google Video and watch a documentary called Earthlings. Particularly the part about pets.

I’d say it should be a must.

Anyway, have if you can adopt any dogs from the dog pound, instead of putting your money into supporting puppy mills.

Getting a dog is a huge responsibility especially when you live in an apartment. I live in a condo and have a dog and we walk her three times a day. I suppose smaller dogs would be better for apartments, but I have a large breed, a Doberman and with the proper training and exercise she’s been a wonderful dog to have. Remember that small dogs can be just as much work in an apartment as a large dog and without proper training, they can get into a lot of bad habits, barking constantly, chewing, just about anything that a large dog can get into. I’d say it’s a major decision no matter what breed you decide on — think about it for a long time and if you’re not ready to commit 100% I’d say don’t do it because for me when you get a pet it’s for a lifetime — not to be given away when they become “too much trouble”.

I am a dog lover. We have an australian shepherd (kind of big for my tastes, and very “intense”), we also have a whippet.. nice size, but still a tad big.. and we have 2 italian greyhounds. Love all our dogs, but the ig’s are much more my size. Not as small as your puppy pictured – which btw, will get bigger than what is pictured.

    Happy pooch hunting!

Maltese is bigger than lasa apso and lasa apso is bigger than shih tzu though the three breeds looks similar you can always distinguish a shih tzu because it has very flat nose, rounded eyes and is really, really small. It is cute but it needs grooming every now and then. Mine is a shih tzu and he is so affectionate, smart and very obedient. Dogs know if they are loved and tends to love you back. Happy dog scouting!

Btw, this blog is interesting. I will link you on both my blogs. Hope you can link me too. Thank you and will be here again.

    Why not get a cat?

There are a lot of advantages. Easy to train – put them in the litter box, show them where the food & water is and Viola! They are pretty much trained.

They are perfect for an apartment, make little or no noise and don’t need a whole lot of attention (usually, there ARE some exceptions).

As for allergies, it might actually be the ‘dander’ which you are alergic to so you might want to check on that part.

Cats are usually very playful too so they can amuse.

    Good Luck!

oh, if the dog is that cute as in the pic, then get one. however, it takes a lot of loving and potty training to live with a pet. i have lived with big breed of dogs like dalmatians, german shepherds, labradors and boxers and it was a lot of work (and love too…) i’m sure your wife will be thrilled if you surprise her with one.

about the apartment issue, yes, you’re right. it’s rather difficult to keep big, hairy dogs in a confined area and there will be lots of hairballs to track =) i guess, your best bet will be a maltese, a chihuahua or those small yorkshire terriers. so cute!

For a small dog I would suggest a small poodle rather than a Maltese. Poodles they don’t shed or smell but do require brushing but not daily like the Maltese. Poodles are very sweet, loving, smart and easily trained. Maltese require daily brushing, are very barky and hard to potty train, if you ever do get them potty trained! A friend of mine had to get her Maltese’s vocal cords cut because of the neighbors complaints of constant high pitched barking and now it has to wear a bell around it’s neck. So sad.

Are you kidding? That dog is gorgeous and would make a wonderful additional any family. Make sure you’re ready because dogs have to be trained and the sooner the better. I have a wonderful dog and he makes my family sooo happy. His name is Boomer.

Dogs are great pets to many individuals, no doubt about that. But if you will ask me, I can’t get a dog since my 4 year old son has a phobia with dogs because he was bitten by our neighbor’s dog. The dog entered our house and bite my son.
