Dogs are great pets to many individuals, no doubt about that. But if you will ask me, I can't get a dog since my 4 year old son has a phobia with dogs because he was bitten by our neighbor's dog. The dog entered our house and bite my son.

Are you kidding? That dog is gorgeous and would make a wonderful additional any family. Make sure you're ready because dogs have to be trained and the sooner the better. I have a wonderful dog and he makes my family sooo happy. His name is Boomer.

For a small dog I would suggest a small poodle rather than a Maltese. Poodles they don't shed or smell but do require brushing but not daily like the Maltese. Poodles are very sweet, loving, smart and easily trained. Maltese require daily brushing, are very barky and hard to potty train, if you ever do get them potty trained! A friend of mine had to get her Maltese's vocal cords cut because of the neighbors complaints of constant high pitched barking and now it has to wear a bell around it's neck. So sad.

oh, if the dog is that cute as in the pic, then get one. however, it takes a lot of loving and potty training to live with a pet. i have lived with big breed of dogs like dalmatians, german shepherds, labradors and boxers and it was a lot of work (and love too...) i'm sure your wife will be thrilled if you surprise her with one.

about the apartment issue, yes, you're right. it's rather difficult to keep big, hairy dogs in a confined area and there will be lots of hairballs to track =) i guess, your best bet will be a maltese, a chihuahua or those small yorkshire terriers. so cute!

Why not get a cat?

There are a lot of advantages. Easy to train - put them in the litter box, show them where the food & water is and Viola! They are pretty much trained.

They are perfect for an apartment, make little or no noise and don't need a whole lot of attention (usually, there ARE some exceptions).

As for allergies, it might actually be the 'dander' which you are alergic to so you might want to check on that part.

Cats are usually very playful too so they can amuse.

Good Luck!

Maltese is bigger than lasa apso and lasa apso is bigger than shih tzu though the three breeds looks similar you can always distinguish a shih tzu because it has very flat nose, rounded eyes and is really, really small. It is cute but it needs grooming every now and then. Mine is a shih tzu and he is so affectionate, smart and very obedient. Dogs know if they are loved and tends to love you back. Happy dog scouting!

Btw, this blog is interesting. I will link you on both my blogs. Hope you can link me too. Thank you and will be here again.

I am a dog lover. We have an australian shepherd (kind of big for my tastes, and very "intense"), we also have a whippet.. nice size, but still a tad big.. and we have 2 italian greyhounds. Love all our dogs, but the ig's are much more my size. Not as small as your puppy pictured - which btw, will get bigger than what is pictured.

Happy pooch hunting!

Getting a dog is a huge responsibility especially when you live in an apartment. I live in a condo and have a dog and we walk her three times a day. I suppose smaller dogs would be better for apartments, but I have a large breed, a Doberman and with the proper training and exercise she's been a wonderful dog to have. Remember that small dogs can be just as much work in an apartment as a large dog and without proper training, they can get into a lot of bad habits, barking constantly, chewing, just about anything that a large dog can get into. I'd say it's a major decision no matter what breed you decide on -- think about it for a long time and if you're not ready to commit 100% I'd say don't do it because for me when you get a pet it's for a lifetime -- not to be given away when they become "too much trouble".

My advice is you go to Google Video and watch a documentary called Earthlings. Particularly the part about pets.

I'd say it should be a must.

Anyway, have if you can adopt any dogs from the dog pound, instead of putting your money into supporting puppy mills.
