Rio de Janeiro is suffering one of the worst drug wars since 1992. In the past days the city of Rio de Janeiro is a complete chaos due to the war between the drug dealers and the police.

Everything started when some of the most vicious criminals(drug dealers) from Rio de Janeiro were transfered to a maximum security prison in the São Paulo. It is known that those in prison are the people in control. They had said that if they were transfered to the maximum security, the “followers” should raise hell to the city of Rio de Janeiro.

In fact, they listened very well to the order and they are destroying and burning anything they can. They are burning cars, buses, vans and motorcycles.
They are terrorizing everyone by shooting at people, invading their homes and closing streets by burning tires.

To stop the attacks, the police asked for help to the navy and the army. The navy supplied armored vehicles that are being used to move special forces inside the “favelas”.

Since the criminals have a sophisticated arsenal, the army was called in order to help fight these people. In the past 3 days, a great number of soldiers were sent to help.

Today (27), the Chief Police Office announced that they are created a plan in order to avoid confrontation during the negotiation with the criminal. They told the criminal to surrender in peace. They should go to a designated place without the guns or holding them above their heads.

If the criminals decide not to surrender, they will have to go inside the Alemão complex to capture them. The worst case scenario would be the necessary of an invasion. In a situation like that many people will die, specially people that have nothing to do with that.

Here are some of the pictures of the situation:

The federal deputy Fernando Gabeira (PV), candidate for the mayoralty of Rio de Janeiro, proposed to the President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), Carlos Arthur Nuzman, this Thursday, that all employees of hotels and taxi companies should study English and Spanish. This would be one of the measures proposed by him to improve the infrastructure of the city to the achievement of the Olympic Games in 2016.

Gabeira argued that the reform of Tom Jobim International Airport is held by private initiative, in addition to the change in signalling the streets of Rio de Janeiro.

Gabeira believes that the legacy of sporting events should remain for the population. “We must transform the practice of sports in the city. We have to be just the scenario of the Olympics. Rio has to develop water sports for example. There are many pools idle in the city,” he said.

Other candidates for the mayoralty of Rio will attend the same presentation. The goal of the COB is starting to partnership with a new mayor that will take possession in 2009, the year that will be decided which city will host the Olympics in 2016.

Alessandro Molon (PT), Eduardo Serra (PCBs) and Jandira Feghali (PC do B) have already made their presentations. Filipe Pereira (PSC), however, could not attend the event as planned. He would accompany the presentation at 11am (Brasilia), but failed. The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) has not yet announced a new date and time for the next meeting with the candidate.

The choice of Rio de Janeiro between the finalists for the Olympic Games of 2016 increased the hopes of South America to host the Olympics Games for the first time on the continent. The Brazilian city was announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as one of candidates this Wednesday in Athens, in addition to Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago.

Rio de Janeiro attempts for the third time be the host of an edition of the Olympic Games. The only time we had a competitor of the South American continent was in 2004.

On that occasion, Rio de Janeiro was competing with Buenos Aires and were left out in the first phase. Argentina ended among the five finalists to host the Games. However, it was defeated by Rome, Cape Town, Stockholm and Athens, which ended up being chosen to be the host.

Latin America also does not have much tradition to hold Olympic Games. The only time a country organized the biggest sporting event in the world was in 1968, when the Olympics took place in Mexico City.

North America can be proud of having hosted five editions of the Olympic Games. Four of them occurred in North American cities (Saint Louis, Los Angeles twice, and Atlanta) and the other was held in the city of Montreal, Canada.

Fortunately this week I wrote an interesting article about Rio de Janeiro plus I added a video about the wonderful city.

The last step to choose the host city for the games is when the panel of IOC (International Olympic Committee) experts will visit the cities to know the proposed sites and talk with the government leader about all the organization of the event.

Because Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2007 Pan American Games the government thinks it will be easier to win the nomination to host the Olympic Games. If that happen Rio de Janeiro would be the first South American city to get the Olympic Games since the game was created. The first of the IOC’s Olympic Games were the 1896 Summer Olympics, held in Athens, Greece.

The final choice for will be made by secret ballot at the IOC Session in Copenhagen on October 2, 2009.

I couldn’t find a better way to show Rio de Janeiro better than a movie. This movie is perfect to show everything you can find in there.

And it doesn’t stop there. Brazil has a great variety of cultures, different types of land, vegetation. But what’s most amazing to me is the amount of variety you can find in such a relatively small state. One of the most well known shores of the world: Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon. And that’s in the city. A two hour drive heading east will take you to breath taking beaches, where you’ll enjoy more reserved and rustic paradises like Buzios, Cabo Frio and Saquerema, the Brazilian capital of surf. Or even a little more south and you’ll find Angra dos Reis and Parati.

The west part of the state offers great mountain-like surroundings. Another great opportunity to immerse ourselves in the great culture Rio offers. In Petrópolis, you’ll be able to visit castles, museums, and historical building like the house of Carlos Drummond de Andrade. You’ll be able to enjoy, again breath taking, waterfalls, rivers. Indulge in the great food. The sweets are my favorite!
So pack away, make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, insect repellent, and of course your camera with plenty of memory. You’ll need it!

Some countries are eligible to go to Brazil without the necessity to get a VISA. For the countries which aren’t part of this group check out the requirements to get a VISA to Brazil.

Estação Primeira de Mangueira samba school parades in Rio de JaneiroThe Brazilian Carnival (Portuguese: Carnaval) is an annual festival in Brazil held 40 days before Easter and marks the beginning of Lent. During Lent, Roman Catholics are supposed to abstain from all bodily pleasures, including the consumption of meat. The carnival, celebrated as a profane event and believed to have its origins in the pagan Saturnalia, can thus be considered an act of farewell to the pleasures of the flesh.Brazilian Carnival as a whole exhibits some differences with its counterparts in Europe and other parts of the world, and within Brazil it has distinct regional manifestations. Brazilian citizens used to riot until the Carnival was accepted by the government as an expression of culture. That was because the Brazilian carnival had its origin in a Portuguese festivity called “entrudo”.

Rio de Janeiro

Modern Brazilian Carnival finds its roots in Rio de Janeiro in the 1845, when the city’s bourgeoisie imported the practice of holding balls and masquerade parties from Paris. It originally mimicked the European form of the festival, over time acquiring elements derived from Native American and African cultures.

In the late 19th century, the cordões (literally laces or strings in Portuguese) were introduced in Rio de Janeiro. These were groups of people who would parade through the streets playing music and dancing. Today they are known as blocos (blocks), consisting of a group of people who dress in costumes or specials t-shirts according to certain themes or to celebrate the Carnival. Blocos are generally associated with particular neighbourhoods or suburbs and include both a percussion or music group and an entourage of revellers.

This “blocos” have become a big part of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival. There are more than 100 “blocos” nowadays and each year this number increases. Some are big, some are small, most concentrate in square and later parade though the streets and a few stay in the same place all the time. Each “bloco” has its place or street to parade and the big ones usually close the streets for car traffic. They usually start in January and last till the end of Carnival, so since the beginning of the year you can see a group of people dancing samba in any street of Rio in the weekends and during Carnival every day.

“Blocos” parade in Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Lagoa, Jardim Botânico, and in the centre of Rio. Usually the people who organize the “bloco” write their own music, which is played at all time during the parade, along with old carnival favourites called in Portuguese “Marchinhas de carnaval”, and sambas that have become classics. Some important “blocos” are “O cordão do bola preta”, that goes through the heart of Rio’s historical center, and “Suvaco do Cristo” (Christ’s armpit in Portuguese), in the neighbourhood, near Rio’s Botanic Garden. Monobloco is another bloco that has become so famous that their band plays all year round in parties and small concerts.
Samba schools are very large, well-financed organizations that work year round in preparation for Carnival. Parading in the Sambadrome runs over four entire nights and is part of an official competition, divided into seven divisions, in which a single samba school will be declared that year’s winner. Blocos deriving from the samba schools also hold street parties in their respective suburbs, through which they parade along with their followers.

Bahia

There are several major differences between Carnival in the state of Bahia in Brazil’s Northeast Region and Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The musical styles are different in each carnival; in Bahia there are many rhythms, including samba, samba-reggae, axé, and others, which are performed on a truck equipped with giant speakers and a platform where musicians play called a trio-elétrico. Massive numbers of people follow the trucks singing and dancing. The “Indian” groups were inspired by Western movies from the United States. The groups dress up as Native Americans and take on Native American names. Blocos Afros, or Afro groups, were influenced by the Black Pride Movement in the United States, independence movements in Africa, and reggae music that denounced racism and oppression. The groups inspired a renewed pride in African heritage.
