A research released this Friday (20) puts the top three Brazilian banks – Itaú, Banco do Brasil and Bradesco – among the top five more profitable banks in 2008 in the Americas, excluding the Canadian institutions.
The Brazilian bank better place is Banco do Brasil, which appears in third place with earnings of $ 3.76 billion, followed immediately by Itaú, with $ 3.34 billion, and Bradesco, with $ 3, 26 billion.
The three institutions have gained space last year, when none of them appeared in the first five positions of the ranking: in 2007, the Itaú appeared in 6th position, Bradesco was in the 7th position and Banco do Brasil was the 12th. This shows that, comparatively, the crisis affected in a positive position in the ranking of these institutions.
In 2007, the list of “top 20″ of the Americas had 16 U.S. banks. Last year, among the 20 most profitable banks in continental Europe, four banks were Brazilians, one Mexican and one Chilean, and 14 American institutions.
In 2008, the most profitable bank was JP Morgan, with $ 5.6 billion, followed by Bank of America, with $ 4 billion – the two institutions have maintained their positions in the table of the Americas, in comparison with the results of 2007.

Last year, the first five positions were U.S. banks. Two of them – the Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs – now appear in intermediate positions in the ranking, while Wachovia just got bought by Wells Fargo.
